Tom Van Berkel
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer

Tom Van Berkel is chairman, president and chief executive officer at The Main Street America Group, a super-regional property/casualty insurance carrier that offers commercial lines, personal lines and surety products exclusively through 3,000 independent insurance agents. The company writes property/casualty in 36 states, surety in 45 states and the District of Columbia and has more than 650,000 policyholders.

Tom joined Main Street America in 1990 as vice president, marketing, and in 1993, was promoted to senior vice president, insurance operations. In 2001, he was elected president and chief operating officer and appointed chief executive officer in 2002. In 2006, Tom was elected chairman of all of The Main Street America Group’s operating companies’ boards.

Prior to joining Main Street America, Tom was senior vice president of personal lines at Associates Insurance Group, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. He has held several other management positions throughout his insurance career, including key roles with Crum and Forster and Trinity Universal Insurance Company.

Tom is very active in the community and insurance industry. He is the immediate past chair of the Jacksonville, Fla., Chamber of Commerce board of directors and has held several other leadership positions at the JAX Chamber including treasurer of the board, chair of the board of governors and chair of JAXUSA Partnership, the Chamber’s economic development initiative. Additionally, Tom is vice president of finance for the North Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America, immediate past chair of the River Club of Jacksonville’s board of directors and a board member of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.

Tom earned his bachelor's degree at Boston College, Boston, Mass.


Bruce Fox
Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary

Bruce Fox is vice president, general counsel and secretary/head of law at The Main Street America Group.

Bruce is responsible for representing Main Street America on all legislative and regulatory affairs. He also ensures Main Street America’s business practices, policies and all other dealings meet state and federal regulatory requirements. Bruce oversees all aspects of governance for our organization to ensure Main Street America is managed in the best interests of our policyholders. Further, he provides legal advice and counsel to senior staff members. In addition, Bruce oversees our state filings unit.

Bruce joined The Main Street America Group in 2003 as senior field attorney and was promoted to managing attorney in 2006, where he oversaw the company’s claims law office in Auburn, Mass. He joined our corporate law staff as corporate counsel in 2007 and was appointed assistant secretary, corporate counsel, in 2008. In January 2011, Bruce was promoted to assistant vice president, general counsel and secretary. In August 2011, Bruce was promoted to vice president/head of law.

Prior to joining Main Street America, Bruce was director of legal services for the contract negotiation and benchmarking services division of AMR Research Inc. His extensive legal experience also includes roles as managing attorney at American International Group and senior trial attorney at two Boston, Mass.-area law firms.

Bruce earned his bachelor’s degree at Suffolk University, Boston, and his juris doctorate degree at Boston College Law School.


Amy Frederick
Vice President and Chief Information Officer

Amy Frederick is vice president and chief information officer at The Main Street America Group. She is a member of the super-regional property/casualty insurance carrier’s senior management team, reporting to chairman and chief executive officer Tom Van Berkel, and is based at its corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla.

Amy oversees Main Street America’s information technology functions which support the organization’s distribution force of 3,200 independent-agent customers and 1,000 employees. Her responsibilities include developing strategic objectives, providing a vision of technology as an enabler of the business and ensuring Main Street America’s technology solutions improve agents’ ease of doing business with the company. Amy also directs the planning, evaluation and acquisition of talent, equipment and resources to effectively manage and execute all automated and manual information technology systems.

Amy joined Main Street America in April 2014 as director of application production in information technology and has a proven track record of leading impactful IT operations at property/casualty companies. This includes her role as CIO—US Operations at Aspen Insurance, the position she held before joining Main Street America. Her background also includes heading finance IT at XL America and as a senior consultant for Krismatic Software, where she supported ING US Financial Services.

Amy earned her bachelor’s degree in management information systems at the University of Vermont.


Ed Kuhl
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Ed Kuhl is the executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer at The Main Street America Group.

Ed is responsible for oversight of all of the organization’s financial activities, including the accounting, treasury, tax, planning and internal audit functions. Ed also oversees the company’s investment unit, as well as our corporate insurance, ceded insurance, reserving and data management functions.

Ed Kuhl joined The Main Street America Group in 1988 as controller. He has served as treasurer of all of Main Street America’s operating companies since 1999 and was elected a vice president in 2000. In 2002, Ed was appointed chief financial officer and promoted to senior vice president, chief financial officer, in 2005. In 2007, he was promoted to executive vice president, chief financial officer.

Before coming to Main Street America, Ed was vice president and chief financial officer of Sedgwick James of Pennsylvania Inc. He has also been the manager of corporate accounting at the PMA Group. He began his insurance career as an accountant in the international division of INA.

Ed earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, with concentrations in accounting and organizational management. He holds several designations including Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance (AIAF) and Associate in Research and Planning (ARP). Ed is a member of Financial Executives International, CPCU Society and Society of Insurance Financial Management.


Jeff Kusch
Senior Vice President/Head of Field Operations

Jeff Kusch is senior vice president/head of field operations at The Main Street America Group, a super-regional property/casualty insurance carrier that offers commercial lines, personal lines and surety products exclusively through 3,000 independent insurance agents. The company writes property/casualty in 36 states, surety in 46 states and the District of Columbia, and has more than 650,000 policyholders. Jeff is also president and chief executive officer of Main Street America affiliate Austin Mutual Insurance Company.

Jeff is responsible for leading Main Street America’s field sales function and directing strategies to spur mutually profitable growth via the company’s distribution network. This includes overseeing Main Street America’s five regions and home office field operations unit.

Prior to his appointment as head of field operations in February 2015, Jeff served as Main Street America’s Western Region president. In this role, he spearheaded the company’s sales operations in the region’s 19 states and oversaw its Western Region headquarters in Maple Grove, Minn.

Jeff joined Austin Mutual in 1992 as an accounting manager. His roles at Austin Mutual included treasurer, corporate secretary, president, CEO and chairman of the board of directors. Prior to joining Austin Mutual, Jeff was a member of the senior audit staff at Coopers & Lybrand LLP.

Jeff is a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Insurance Services, the Minnesota Insurance Guaranty Association, the Property & Casualty Insurers Association of America, the Property Loss Research Bureau and Epien Medical Inc.

Jeff earned his bachelor's degree in accounting at Winona State University, Winona, Minn., and also holds a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.


Dave Medvidofsky
Vice President/Head of Human Resources

Dave Medvidofsky is vice president/head of human resources at The Main Street America Group. He is responsible for the strategic direction and implementation of Main Street America’s human resources strategy and products, and oversees the organization’s administrative services and corporate communications functions. Additionally, he facilitates the company’s enterprise risk management program.

Dave, who joined Main Street America in 1991 as a personal lines underwriter, has held numerous leadership positions during his tenure at the company. This includes vice president of internal audit, vice president and general manager of its Information Systems & Services Corporation subsidiary and assistant vice president of corporate strategy. He also has worked on the independent agency side of the business.

Dave has been published in numerous industry publications including National Underwriter, CPCU Journal and Best’s Review. He has contributed to course materials for The Institutes’ Associate in Risk Management – ERM and Accredited Adviser in Insurance – Management programs. He also has served on many industry committees and is a past president of the CPCU Society.

Dave is a summa cum laude graduate of Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, N.H., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management and a master’s degree in leadership. He holds CPCU, CIC, CRM, ARM, AAI and AIAF insurance industry designations.
